Meet The Team

Lohitash Karumbaiah

Associate Professor

Dr. Karumbaiah directs the Translational Glycomaterials Laboratory, where his research is focused on the development of novel functional glycomaterials for nerve repair and neural interfacing applications. He is also a member of the regenerative bioscience center (RBC), which was created to promote cross-discipline and multi-institutional biomedical research within the Georgia Research Alliance with the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State, the Medical College of Georgia, and Emory University. Prior to joining the University of Georgia, Dr. Karumbaiah was a senior research scientist in the Neurological Biomaterials and Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory, Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Here he studied the nerve-repulsive properties of scar-associated sugars in nervous system injuries and mechanisms of recording failure of chronically implanted intracortical recording electrodes. Dr. Karumbaiah has previously worked in product development and new product launch for Monsanto company and has also served as a study director for a medical device company.

Hi, this is Md Marzan Sarkar (Marzan), a Ph.D. student in Dr. Steven Stice and Dr. Lohitash Karumbaiah's lab. In August 2021, I started my Ph.D. in Neuroscience at The University of Georgia, Athens. I have been working to develop therapeutics against one of the deadliest brain tumors (Glioblastoma Multiform), the most aggressive and recurrent form of brain tumor occurring in adults with no effective treatments. My ongoing research aims to investigate the dysregulated molecular signaling pathways responsible for the pathogenesis of this brain tumor to identify novel targets for drug development and improve drug delivery.

I graduated (2015) and am post-graduated (2016) from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, with a B.Sc. and M.Sc. major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have worked here in a behavioral neuroscience laboratory for more than four years, along with my academic studies.

To expand my knowledge of cutting-edge technology, I joined Incepta Vaccine Limited, Bangladesh (May 2018- June 2021) as a quality control officer. I used to monitor the quality of vaccines (e.g., Hepatitis B, Rabies, Meningitis, Influenza, typhoid, Cholera Vaccine, etc.) in different manufacturing stages using several sophisticated analytical procedures following GLP (Good Laboratory Practice).
